Australia’s marine reserve network is at risk. But you can help make a difference and ensure our hard-fought battles do not come undone. Discover what action Project AWARE is taking to stop the rollbacks and if you live or work in Australia add your personal view at #SaveOurSanctuaries.
In 2012, we watched as history was made. Australia created the world’s largest network of marine sanctuaries, protecting some of the most iconic dive sites in the world. Divers everywhere responded to calls to action by sending submissions, lobbying and sharing the news across the globe. It was an exciting moment in history; a renewed optimism for the future of marine sanctuaries worldwide.
But two and half years on, our hard-fought battles are under threat. After 15 years of extensive scientific investigation, and the most thorough public consultation process in Australia’s history, we’re seeing significant and serious rollbacks, which threaten to undermine the hard work we’ve done as well as putting our marine life at risk.
These parks were due to come into effect on July 1st, 2014, but in December 2013, the newly elected Australian government put the parks at risk for cut backs or being erased completely. The government suspended the national network and began a costly and unnecessary review.
Now, the public consultation is open again for all Australians to have their say. If you live or work in Australia you can add your personal view and help #SaveOurSanctuaries.
We have until February 28th to share our views and help secure protection in areas that need it most. We can make a difference today. Don’t let our hard work go to waste. Have your say – respond to the public consultation by 28th February. #SaveOurSanctuaries
