It’s Dive O’Clock Somewhere: Bonaire

David BenzA turtle cruises by on Buddy Dive Resort's house reef.
On the shore diving capital of the world, your dive schedule is practically unlimited. From early morning to midnight, you can grab a tank and wade into one of Bonaire’s more than 70 shore-dive sites from a pristine beach. But with all that diving, make sure to carve out some time to unwind. A late-afternoon dive and subsequent early evening cocktail is the perfect way to relax on any night in the Caribbean.
Happy Hour Dive Site: Salt Pier
Why It’s an Editor’s Pick: One of Bonaire’s most famous shore-diving sites, Salt Pier offers an easily accessible, exciting dip for divers of all certification levels. After making your entry, you’ll zig-zag through the pier’s coral- and sponge-encrusted pillars. Schools of grunts and yellowtail snapper by the hundreds love to congregate here, as well as barracuda, tarpon and octopi. Late afternoon or early evening is arguably the best time to dive Salt Pier, when critters of all sizes are active, feeding and breeding on the artificial reef. Plus, this is when the site looks most magical, as streams of golden light from the low-hanging sun intersect the pillars. The pier is owned by Cargill Salt Company, which makes famous Bonaire salt from seawater and ships it worldwide.

Becca HurleyRemember to check the currents upon entry to decide which direction to plan your dive.
Signature Experience: Salt Pier’s see-forever visibility and shallow depths (20 to 55 feet max) make it a hot spot for underwater photography. Macro lovers can comb the corals and sponges, focusing on subjects from christmas tree worms to seahorses. Wide-angle shooters frame the scene as a whole, taking delight in turtles, spotted eagle rays and schools of fish against the unique backdrop of the criss-crossing pillars.
After exploring the pier, make your way to one of Bonaire’s most popular resorts for a sunset cocktail.
