Why Buddy Dive Bonaire Is a Top Destination for a Scuba Instructor Course in the Caribbean
Bonaire’s bountiful reefs and warm Caribbean waters set the stage for divers looking to maximize their bottom time, without ever setting foot on a dive boat. Year after year, this Southern Caribbean island ranks among the world’s best for scuba diving and specifically shore diving opportunities. Bonaire’s pleasant year-round weather and ideal dive conditions attract enthusiast divers and professionals from around the world to explore more than 60 marked shore dive sites.
Why Bonaire Is Ideal for a Scuba Diving Instructor Course
The island’s predictable and consistent dive conditions have also made Bonaire a popular choice for Instructor Development Course (IDC) candidates who are seeking a top-tier education from a well-respected dive operator, like Buddy Dive Bonaire.
Designated as a PADI 5-Star Career Development Center, the highest honor awarded by PADI, Buddy Dive Bonaire has everything needed on-site to train for becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor and has been hosting Instructor Development Courses since 2010. For IDC candidates in search of Platinum-level training in the heart of the Caribbean, completing your scuba instructor course at Buddy Dive Bonaire offers convenience, mentorship and an immersive all-inclusive experience.

The Buddy Dive Academy at Buddy Dive Bonaire is run by Platinum Course Director Lars Bosman and a dedicated team of IDC Staff Instructors. Completing a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor course here means classrooms, the training pool and confined- and open-water training sites, including Buddy’s Reef, are all located within the resort.
The house reef is located mere steps from the dive shop and allows candidates to maximize their underwater time without working around boat schedules or traveling to dive sites with challenging dive conditions.
A simple shore entry is the only step that stands between an IDC candidate and their main training site where they will spend two weeks learning theory and demonstrating the skills needed to pass their Instructor Exam.

Instructor Development Course Highlights at Buddy Dive Bonaire
To become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you must first complete your Divemaster certification, followed by an Instructor Development Course. IDC candidates at Buddy Dive benefit from an all-inclusive setting that includes their accommodations, food and dives. Candidates begin each two-week program by meeting fellow candidates and Platinum course directors Lars Bosman and Rosie Alvelais Crocker.
The course uses interactive workshops to keep learning engaging while introducing teaching methods candidates will soon use with their own students.
The program begins with a Five Theory exam and a fun dive at the end of the first day. Classroom sessions take place in the morning, followed by afternoon dives during 10 days of intensive learning and skills practice, including the 24 Skills Circuit.
What Makes This PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course Stand Out
Candidates are then evaluated during a two-day Instructor Examination conducted by an impartial PADI Instructor Examiner to confirm they meet organizational standards.
During training, Buddy Dive IDC candidates also become Emergency First Response instructors and Emergency Oxygen Provider instructors.

The standard programming at Buddy Dive Bonaire goes beyond minimum PADI requirements. In addition to opportunities to support marine conservation through Buddy Dive’s Reef Renewal program, mentorship remains a defining part of the experience.
Rosie Alvelais Crocker said her teaching style emphasizes coaching and personal connection.
“My personal teaching style is coaching-focused and relationship-driven. I like to take the time to really get to know each candidate—their strengths, areas they find challenging, and their goals for becoming a dive professional. The goal isn’t just to help people pass the course or the Instructor Examination, but to help them grow into confident, capable instructors who become high performers in real-world situations.”
