TUSA Selene BC I'm a minimalist in many ways, and when it comes to scuba gear, in my opinion, less is always better. As a woman diver, I prefer to dive with a smaller tank and a low-profile rig, and I don't need all the bells and whistles for my open-water diving adventures. So when I was asked to take the Selene BC down for a spin around the Spiegel Grove, I was a bit pessimistic. After all, I wasn't familiar with this BC, and I began to wonder if it would be to my disadvantage to dive it for the first time in a strong current with every intention of doing some wreck penetration. So before I got on the dive boat, I pulled the Selene out for a closer look. I had to admit I liked the look of the BC. It has a lot of padding (especially on the back), and its general cut is basically open through the chest area — just two padded shoulder straps that can even be adjusted for shoulder width — and full around the hips (definitely designed for a woman's frame). It is well-made (840 denier) with a soft fabric interior. The integrated quick-release weight system is easy enough to operate, and there is a ton of pocket space for my lights, wreck reel and whatever else I want to take with me. There are actually four pockets — two large ones on each side and two smaller separate zipper pockets under each of those, perfect for small backup lights, gloves, or as I sometimes need, a trash pocket (for impromptu underwater cleanups). I know I said less is always better, but in this case I'm making an exception — these extra pockets are great. The true test was how this BC would perform in action, and I was in for a pleasant surprise. Despite the ripping current that day, the streamlined Selene with its lower-back dump valve allowed me to slip down to the wreck with virtually no drag. As I passed through restriction after restriction on the Spiegel Grove, I never got snagged, slipping easily through the openings. I used my handy-dandy pockets to swap out lights a few times during the dive. On the safety stop, I realized just how comfy this BC is. Even hanging on the mooring line in a strong current, no straps cut into my shoulders and the waistline cummerbund stayed snugly in place. So the next time any of you fellow women divers are in the market for a truly comfortable and well-designed BC, check out the Tusa Selene. You'll appreciate the fit just as much as the style. IMPRESSIONS Built for a woman's frame, the Selene is a nicely detailed BC, comfy both on the boat and in the water.
