Underwater Pumpkin Carving in the Devil's Den

Happy Halloween, divers! We here at Scuba Diving celebrated a little early this year, trying a classic holiday activity in a new way. Yep, underwater pumpkin carving is totally a thing.

New Port Richey, Florida, dive shop Super Sports & Scuba hosted its eighth-annual underwater carving, or "pumpkin sacrifice," as shop owner Dennis Koslin puts it, at Devil's Den spring in Williston, Florida.

From keeping your buoyancy while sawing through the orange flesh to keeping the pumpkin from floating to the surface (some brought extra lead to hold theirs down, others improvised with rocks from the cavern), it's definitely harder than it looks. But it's also much more exciting than traditional topside carving.

Halloween fun for the whole family, the day ended with a cookout and spooky blackout night dive, followed by ghost stories around the campfire.
