Aggressor Adventures CEO Wayne Brown passed away on March 3 after a private 18-month battle with bile duct cancer. He was 65. He will be remembered by the countless lives he touched, and for the intrepid spirit and sense of adventure he exemplified in his dive-travel business and beyond.
Growing up on a small Florida farm helped develop in Brown a sense of independence and forward-thinking. But as much as he may have enjoyed cultivating the land, he never quite felt as intimate a connection with nature as he did when visiting the beaches of St. Augustine, Florida, whose tide pools he could explore for hours in search of marine life.
“Wayne will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, respected leader, and passionate adventurer whose love for life inspired everyone around him. His legacy of exploration, leadership and dedication to sharing the world’s most extraordinary places will continue to inspire the Aggressor team and travelers worldwide. In keeping with Wayne’s wish that ‘the show must go on,’ the team at Aggressor Adventures remains committed to carrying forward the vision he built by delivering exceptional service and unforgettable adventures to guests around the world.”

Brown would go on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, where he trained as a medic. After that, he worked through the corporate ranks of Taco Bell and eventually became a franchise owner of around 60 stores. He sold those off in 2006, the same year he booked his first trips aboard Aggressor Fleet’s live-aboard yachts—and changed the course of his life.
Shortly after those trips, Brown learned that Aggressor Fleet was available for purchase—and that it operated under a franchise model, which gave him a leg up from an owner’s perspective. He acted quickly, and in 2007, the dive adventurer became a dive operator, and Aggressor began its transformation into the global brand it is today.
When we spoke with Brown early last year, he gave a nod to his time spent in the fast-food industry as a contributor to his later success. “Obviously, it’s very different from working with 1,500 fast-food employees,” Brown reflected. “We’re always trying to add another level of service. We fail sometimes, just like everybody else. But we try our best and make up for it if things go sideways.”

And if there’s one thing Brown was always eager to do, it was to put in the work. Already an avid diver himself, he realized a love of the sport wasn’t enough. To be a real success story, to innovate, he needed to understand the dive industry from all angles. So he spent the better part of a year learning. He attended trade shows. He met with the boat owners to better understand their needs. He went on trips and interacted with guests to better understand their needs, a practice he would continue throughout the years.
In 2008, Brown purchased Aggressor competitor Dancer Fleet, further expanding the company’s global reach. With that growth, Brown continued to evolve the ways his fleet of liveaboards serviced its guests. What began as a means for passionate divers to cram as much diving into a single trip transformed into more robust, curated experiences. Chefs were enlisted to serve gourmet dishes. Hot tubs and other amenity upgrades were installed.

Diving may be at its heart, but Brown realized that unless Aggressor evolved into an outfitter that branched beyond one niche sport, it would never be as big as he dreamed. So, in 2018, he opened the first Aggressor Signature Lodge in Sri Lanka and Aggressor River Cruises in Egypt. With these came a rebranding of the company to Aggressor Adventures, a name more befitting of its ever-growing portfolio.
Today, Aggressor Adventures offers liveaboard itineraries in nearly two dozen destinations. It has opened a second Signature Lodge in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and it is set to launch its new Floating Resorts brand in Hurghada, Egypt.

Brown’s death is a loss felt by many in the dive community, but his legacy and vision will endure through the company he devoted so much of his life to. Through Aggressor Adventures, his story continues.
