ScubaLab Best Buy Scuba Diving BCs: Mares Bolt SLS

The Mares Bolt SLS was rated as the Best Buy in the back-inflation category by scuba divers during the ScubaLab 2017 BC review. See what made this BC the favorite of our test divers in the video review below.

I'm Roger Roy, the ScubaLab Director. We tested the Mares Bolt SLS BC. Versatile and comfortable and with an attractive price, it was our Best Buy among back-inflation BCs.

We tested the Bolt SLS at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida. We conducted objective testing in the pool to measure its buoyant lift and its inherent buoyancy and to gauge its ability to cope with a runaway power inflator. We also conducted a series of test dives where testers scored the BC in ten categories including comfort, stability and ascent control.

The Bolt is an ambitious design with loads of lift — we measured 41 pounds in size medium — able to handle single or double tanks and is still compact enough to travel. What's impressive is that it does all of those things quite well. The harness, with full back plate and cummerbund, has great lumbar support and the swiveling shoulder buckles and single position sternum strap provide a solid fit without begin restrictive.

The SLS stands forSlide & Lock system, a new integrated weight design that displays a green indicator when latched. To load you slide the pocket in and press the red tab on the end of the handle. A few divers thought it a little fussy, but most found it easy once they got the hang of it.

It also has lots of room for gear with a roll down zippered cargo pocket as well as six well-positioned stainless D-rings and left side mounting grommets. Capable and versatile and with the lowest as-tested price in its category, the Mares Bolt SLS was our Best Buy for back-inflation BCs.
