In April, Poseidon, a dive-gear manufacturer out of Sweden, announced it will be the diving partner in Virgin Oceanic’s historic expedition to the explore the world’s deepest ocean trenches. Headed by Virgin Group’s founder, Sir Richard Branson, the Five Dives Expedition will take a special solo-piloted submarine to the deepest points in each of the world’s five oceans, starting with the deepest of all — the Pacific’s Mariana Trench later in 2011.

Poseidon’s engineers will help develop the submarine’s primary breathing system, and the company’s fully automatic rebreather — the Poseidon Discovery — has already been selected as back-up breathing system for the underwater vessel.
