Shark Bites Decline Worldwide

The number of unprovoked shark bites worldwide dropped from 69 in 2023 to 47 in 2024, according to the latest report from the International Shark Attack File (ISAF)—a database of all known shark attacks.

Ocean currents, water temperatures, prey availability and the number of people in the water can influence human-shark interactions. Joe Miguez, ISAF Toothy manager, says that for most recreational divers, the risk of an unfavorable shark encounter is extremely low, especially when observing sharks in a noninvasive way.

Baiting, feeding, spearfishing and trying to touch sharks can increase the chance of a bite. “Divers should be mindful of these factors and always approach marine life with respect and caution,” says Miguez.
