PADI to Host Free Early Screenings of “Thirteen Lives,” New Thai Cave Diving Rescue Film

The rescue that riveted the world is hitting the silver screen with the new film “Thirteen Lives,” and PADI is giving divers the exclusive opportunity to see the film for free before its release.

Starring Colin Ferrell, Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton, the movie tells the true story of seven cave divers who flew from around the world to Thailand to save twelve youth soccer players and their coach from a flooded cave. The entire world watched as the international rescue effort stretched from June to July 2018. Thousands of people—from local governments, police, volunteers and soldiers to the U.S. Navy SEALs—supported the operation as an early start to the monsoon season threatened to flood the cave entirely. One Thai Navy seal drowned during the operation, and a second died a year later of a blood infection he contracted during the rescue.

Against the odds, the seven cave divers saved the entire soccer team and their coach after 18 days. PADI awarded the seven cave divers the Medal of Valor later that year at the annual DEMA show.

Directed by Ron Howard, “Thirteen Lives” was filmed in Australia and Thailand by MGM and will be distributed by Amazon Studios. The cave scenes were filmed in reproductions based on schematics provided by National Geographic and tours in the caves with the divers.

The screenings, made possible by PADI and Prime Video, will run from Tuesday, July 19 through Thursday, July 21 in Austin, Houston, New York, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Honolulu, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. An exclusive happy hour for PADI Club members will accompany the Los Angeles and San Diego screening.
