ScubaLab Testers Choice Scuba Diving Regulators: Aqua Lung Calypso

The Aqua Lung Calypso was our Testers Choice for scuba diving regulators under $400 in ScubaLab's 2017 regulator test. See what made this reg a winner in the eyes of our test divers.

I'm Roger Roy, the ScubaLab Director. We tested the Aqua Lung Calypso regulator. With top scores in its category for dry, easy breathing, it was our Testers Choice for scuba regulators under $400.

We tested the Calypso's ability to deliver air at a range of depths and breathing rates on the breathing simulator at Dive Lab in Panama City Beach, Florida.

We also tested the Calypso at Alexander Springs in Central Florida with a team of test divers, who scored it in 14 categories such as ease of breathing, dry operation and overall comfort.

This new Calypso combines a decades-long heritage with lots of new upgrades. The first stage looks nearly unchanged — still with the single HP port — save for the updated graphics. But not so the second stage, which sports a soft diaphragm cover with a streamlined profile and a more modern look. The old quick-release hose fitting is gone and the venturi control and internal mechanism are all new.

A comparison with the earlier Calypso's breathing simulator charts shows performance has also been ramped up, with the new Calypso racking up excellent and very good scores and operating within our test parameters down to 262 feet.

In the water, it took top scores in its category for ease of breathing and dry operation in swim position and it was the top selection as the favorite of test divers. The Calypso is our Testers Choice for scuba regulators under $400.
