Drivers in Texas have a new way to show their dive pride.

The Lone Star State recently permitted the development of a specialty scuba license plate thanks to the sponsorship of the City of Houston Underwater Mariners (CHUM), a nonprofit dive club.

Although other states have dive-themed license plates, Texas’ will be the first to don the words “scuba diver” below the plate number. The plate will also show the image of a scuba diver, sea turtle, fish, a red-and-white dive flag in the shape of the state and a blue-and-white diver down flag.

CHUM’s hope is that the plate will foster awareness and appreciation for Texas’ dive community and underwater gems, says the nonprofit’s co-founder Roger Veteto. Some of the state’s most notable dive sites include Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, the Comal and San Marcos rivers, Hill Country springs and more.

“People don’t think [there are] good places to dive in Texas,” Veteto tells Houston’s The Leader. “So we want to make people aware of the diving opportunities.”

The scuba club submitted its request for a specialty plate with My Plates, a business contracted by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to handle some of the state’s specialty plate applications. Once the design was approved, it had to amass at least 200 commitments from motorists willing to purchase the plate within the first six months of its availability.

From to design to being listed on the My Plates website, the process has taken about 13 months. But drivers should start seeing cars with the specialty plate mid-July, Valeto says, and it’ll be well worth the hurdles to promote the Texas dive community.

“I’ve been diving 20 years and people have been talking about having a scuba diving plate before I even started,” Veteto says. “Diving has really changed my life. It has taken me to parts of the world I would have never thought I’d see. I’ve met the best people in the world on dive boats. It’s about sharing the adventure.”

You can register to order the Texas Diver Plate at MyPlates.com. CHUM will receive a small portion of proceeds from each plate.
