Apeks XL4+ Regulator Review: ScubaLab Testers Choice

ScubaLab's team of test divers evaluated the updated Apeks XL4+ regulator in its latest scuba gear review.

We measured regulators’ ability to deliver air at a range of depths and breathing rates on the breathing simulator at Dive Lab in Panama City Beach, Florida.

We also tested regs at Alexander Springs in Central Florida with a team of test divers who scored them in 14 categories including ease of breathing, dry operation and comfort.

One of test divers’ few complaints in last year’s test of the original XL4 was the lack of a second high pressure port – a feature we’re glad to see on the new XL4+. Otherwise (aside from the new all-white color scheme) the + has all the attributes that made the original XL4 a winner. Designed for cold water reliability, the beefy diaphragm first stage weighs the better part of 2 pounds, with lots of heat-retaining mass and long heat-exchange fins to fight ice buildup.

But the second stage is tiny and remarkably light (just 4 ½ ounces on our scale). That – along with the reg’s smooth, quiet breathing performance — earned it the top score in the test for second-stage comfort. “You forget you even have it in your mouth,” one test diver commented. There’s no breathing adjustment, but the reg still managed to take excellent scores at all depths and breathing rates in our simulator testing.

And divers praised its dry, easy air delivery. With dive-all-day comfort and solid performance, the Apeks XL4+ is our Testers Choice for regs over $500.
